Senior Vice President and General Manager
Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc.

“Whenever we show the display to someone they remark how it has a shimmering, iridescent glow to it, like a butterfly's wings. That is the basic idea of our display, we use mirrors to bounce light back.”

Dr. Clarence Chui is senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc. (QMT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm. QMT has commercialized mirasol® displays, an industry-transforming technology that uses interferometric modulation (IMOD), based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) to create low power, reflective color displays that are visible in virtually any environment and capable of video rate response times. In his role, Dr. Chui is charged with overseeing the continued evolution and development of the technology, as well as establishing a strong commercial presence in mobile consumer devices.

Previously, Dr. Chui served as senior vice president of engineering for QMT, overseeing the MEMS Research and Innovation Center (MRIC) and the core research and development activities. Here, Dr. Chui played a significant role in leading the development of capabilities to help shape business strategy and divisional financials. His areas of responsibility included core MEMS display technologies as well as panel process manufacturing, module manufacturing, systems and product development.

Dr. Chui joined Qualcomm with the 2004 acquisition of Iridigm Display Corporation, where he was a senior director of engineering. Prior to that position, Dr. Chui served as director of array engineering, with responsibility for the development and design of all core MEMS technology architectures. Dr. Chui originally joined Iridigm in 1999 as a principal design engineer, and was tasked with defining the first-generation IMOD device architecture.

Dr. Chui received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Chui holds some 60 US patents with numerous additional applications in his name. He is a member of the Society for Information Display (SID).
