Improving energy efficiency is an essential first step in creating greener mobile devices. Pike Research's analysis indicates that reflective display technologies such as interferometric modulator displays (IMOD) provide a significant energy efficiency advantage over incumbent technologies such as LCD or OLED.

Based on a simple lifecycle analysis, Cleantech firm Pike Research concluded that use of a device with a mirasol display would result in 94% reduction in carbon dioxide equivalents from the use of the display. This efficiency would equate to fewer charge cycles, thereby extending the life of the battery for an estimated 1.25 years (fewer batteries in landfills).
