A message from Jim Cathey, Vice President, Business Development, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies

Welcome to the first Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT) blog entry. For those of you who may not be familiar with what our group does, we developed the industry’s first display for mobile devices that uses IMOD technology. The same phenomenon that makes a butterfly’s wings shimmer is the same process used in our mirasol® displays. mirasol displays work by reflecting light so specific wavelengths interfere with each other to create color (that’s called biomimicry, but more on that later). A lot of things make mirasol different: view-ability in bright sunlight, rapid refresh rates that accommodate video, and low power consumption. But what really makes us special and unique is the itsy bitsy tiny mirrors in our displays that actually reflect ambient light back out of the display as an image.

As the business development leader for QMT, I’m delighted to share with you our team’s vision on this blog. I want to keep you abreast of company news, of course, but I also want to give you a first and up-close look at the real display innovation happening here at QMT. I’ll introduce you to the folks putting our display in their devices (our customers), some of the other folks on the QMT team, and I’ll make sure you get up to speed on what products we’re targeting next.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a career focused on an industry I enjoy, and I’m especially looking forward to sharing a point-of-view on industry news and where I think displays are headed in this blog. Most importantly, we invite you to participate. Follow along as we blog about the many industry events we participate in, like the Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress. We welcome your reader comments and emails and encourage you to share your thoughts and tell us what you’d like us to blog about.

For myself, and the entire QMT team, thank you for being part of our community.
